Summer Waste

August 27th, 2010

Bottled wasteIn the summer we enjoy many of nature’s wonderful gifts; beautiful parks, singing birds, blooming flowers and sandy beaches. How will your summer choices affect the environment you enjoy?

Drinking even one bottle of water each day of the summer can have a negative impact on your body and the environment. More than half of bottled water comes from municipal sources and may contain toxins that have leached from the plastic bottle. When bottled water is purified, everything is stripped from the water, including beneficial minerals and nutrients. When you choose to drink bottled water rather than Kangen Water®, you are denying your body natural antioxidant power, beneficial nutrients, and complete hydration.

Did you know the production of a plastic water bottle uses 7 times as much water as the bottle holds? For every pint of bottled water you drink, 7 pints of water were used, polluted, and returned to our earth. If you use just one plastic bottle water each day of the summer you will have consumed 70 or more bottles. This means that 490 pints, or 61 gallons of water, will have been wasted and polluted.

Remember your reusable container this summer and prevent excess waste in your body and the planet. Bring extra bottles of refreshing Kangen Water® for your friends and neighbors to promote healthy habits all around!

Take Exercise Outdoors

August 16th, 2010

Summer is a great time to take on new adventures. Spice up your fitness routine by taking it outdoors. Below are some ideas to help you get started:

  • Relive your youth by walking to your neighborhood park. Pump your legs as you feel the cool breeze on the swings or test your strength with pull ups at the monkey bars.
  • Rent a kayak if you live near a lake, river, or the ocean. You can burn up to 500 calories an hour!
  • Challenge your friends to a tennis match or even badminton! Learning to play a new sport is great exercise for your mind and body.
  • Join a bicycle riding group. Riding clubs have become especially popular in the last year. Joining a group will give you the motivation and encouragement of others in a fun environment.
  • Find a hidden trail to hike. Enjoy your natural surroundings as you look for beautiful flowers, birds and wildlife.

Kangen Water
To prevent dehydration, remember to bring your bottle of Kangen Water®. The heat can drain your reserves quickly and your body will need extra water to function properly. Aim to drink 8-10 ounces of water every 20 minutes when working out in the summer sun. Even minor dehydration can lead to muscle cramps, fatigue and headaches.

This may also be a great opportunity to share your secret of healthy water with your exercise partners. Bring along an extra bottle of Kangen Water® just for them!

Whichever exercise methods you choose, get out there this summer, stay healthy in the sun and get fit.

Warning Signs of Dehydration

July 24th, 2010

Prevent Dehydration - Drink Kangen WaterDehydration is far too common, given how preventable it is. Dehydration occurs when we put out more water than we take in. This happens often in the summer when we are spending more time in outdoor activities. With clean, healthy, great tasting Kangen Water® you can enjoy staying properly hydrated all summer.

We lose water through our breath, sweat, and urine throughout the day. Sweating is our body’s natural cooling mechanism but when we fail to replace the water lost through sweating, our body cannot perform at optimal level. This is why it is important to be very attentive to your water intake levels during these hot summer months.

By the time you feel thirsty you may be already dehydrated. It is important to be aware of the early signs of dehydration, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Dry, sticky mouth.
  • Feeling lightheaded
  • Producing less urine or dark urine.
  • Lack of energy or alertness

The best plan is Pre-Hydration! Dehydration occurs over time so prevent it altogether by drinking plenty of good, clean water throughout the day. If you know you will be playing in the sun or exercising more than usual, plan accordingly and bring extra Kangen Water®.

Do you hate the idea of buying bottled water or drinking tap water from public fountains? If you freeze a few reusable water containers with Kangen Water® you’ll be sure to have nice, cool, refreshing water by the end of your day. (Remember not to fill your bottle too high – water expands when frozen.) You could also make your own ice cubes by mixing Kangen Water® and fruit juice!

Bringing along extra bottles prevents unnecessary contaminants or pollutants, often present in bottled and tap water, from entering your body. It is also a great way to share Kangen Water® with your friends and family!

Summer Ailments

July 22nd, 2010

RashesFor many people, June and July mean the end of all the ailments associated with spring: influenza, hay fever, allergies, and rosacea. Summer is a great time to get outdoors and safely enjoy the sun, beach, pool, campgrounds, etc. But summer brings a unique set of health concerns that are mostly preventable.

Here’s a list of common summer ailments, and some tips on what to do if you experience them this season:

1. Sunburns and Heatstroke.
Check here for an overview of this common summer health condition. This is a very preventable health issue! Remember to increase your water intake when you’re in the heat, be diligent with your sunscreen, wear hats, sunglasses, and loose-fitting clothing, and limit vigorous exercise in excessive heat.

2. Food Poisoning.
Every time you attend a BBQ, picnic, or any event that serves food outdoors, be wary of perishable foods that have been left in the sun. Also, make sure your grilled meats are fully cooked. Bacteria such as Staphylococcus or E. coli are usually the culprits in contaminated food. Food poisoning can last for a couple days, so the biggest concern is dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea. The most important thing you can do is stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to replace the fluids you lose when you get sick. Avoid solid foods until you are no longer experiencing negative side effects.

3. Prickly Heat.
This irritable rash is common in hot, humid weather, and is caused by clogged sweat glands. Children and infants are especially prone to develop prickly heat. It causes small red rashes that are very uncomfortable and spread quickly. Prickly heat can best be avoided by staying hydrated, keeping your skin cool with loose clothing, air conditioning, and misting the skin with clean water when you’re in the heat. Sometimes your doctor will prescribe topic creams if the rash becomes severe.

Poison Ivy
4. Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac.
Direct contact with these plants can cause an itchy rash to form on your skin, and you may develop small blisters that resemble the vine of a plant. Be aware of what these plants look like before you go on your next hike, so you know what to avoid. Treat poison ivy, oak, and sumac with calamine lotion, 1% hydrocortisone cream, and tepid baths. Try not to scratch!

You may have noticed a common theme for each of these ailments: water. Whether you drink more water, mist water on your skin to cool down, or submerge yourself in a bath, it is an amazing health booster for summer conditions!

Trust Kangen Water® to give your body ultimate hydration and enhance your health this summer. Drink 8-10 glasses of water every day, or more if you spend a lot of time in the sun. Enagic’s Beauty Water is the perfect option for baths or mists. It leaves your skin moisturized and glowing!
